Alpha Dog
When a dog is brought into your home you must be more than his caretaker, you must be the alpha dog leader. The alpha dog leader
calls the shots. If you don't step up to the bat and take the position your dog will. Being the alpha dog leader is what dog training and
ownership is all about. A dog will feel secure if it has a strong leader. In the wild dogs live in packs. A dog pack always has a leader, the
alpha dog.
If you are having problems with your family dog it is because there is confusion over the alpha dog leader. You must exude
alpha qualities with your voice, body language and attitude of confidence. You must be comfortable in the role of alpha leader.
An alpha dog leader is NOT abusive. You must be firm with your dog. It will take patience and consistency. It does not need to
take a long time to establish yourself as the alpha dog leader. This site will provide you with insight into becoming the leader to your
dog. You dog will be much happier and easier to train when it is clear that you are the alpha dog leader.
Ten Minutes to Alpha Dog Leader
Command your dog to sit, stay. Watch him and when he moves from the sitting position pick him up and place him back on the same
spot. Again, command your dog to sit, stay. When he breaks from the sitting position again repeat the process. Continue this as many times as it
takes. After a few minutes the dog will understand that you are the alpha leader.
The job of alpha dog leader is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You must always be the alpha dog leader whenever your dog is
within ear shot. You must exhibit confidence in your body language, and voice tones. Dogs are smart. You cannot be unfair or sadistic in your
judgments. Your dog will know when you are inconsistent and being arbitrary.
Alpha Dog - Alpha Dog Leader - Obedience Training
Set limits and demand adherence to your rules. When negative actions occur by your dog reprimand fairly but quickly. Be hands
on, but not abusive. If you command your dog to sit carefully but firmly push his rump down. Forgive quickly and praise
justly.
If you see your dog about to do something that is acceptable to you, give him permission. This is especially
important if he has looked directly at you. In this way, you are teaching your dog to look to you for permission instead of making decisions
on his own.
Every dog needs a leader to lead, to listen to, and to adore. When he doesn't have an alpha dog leader to follow he
assumes the role and becomes the alpha dog. A dog who is his own alpha leader becomes mean. He will mark his house with urine, growl when given a
command, and bark unceasingly at all hours of the day or night.
Training Continually Reinforces Your Position as Alpha Dog Leader
Training is not a one time thing, it is a continual process. In a dog pack, the alpha dog lets the pack know he is the alpha
dog leader by literally pushing the other dogs. The alpha dog will force attention on himself while walking by nudging the dogs next to him, he
will also hog the bedding area and is the first one to eat. You need to do the same. Remind your dog that you are the alpha dog leader.
Push your dog firmly but gently when he is at your side. Force your dog to keep his eyes and attention on you.
