Book Review: Clickertraining

Canis Clicker Training is the product of Morten Egtvedt and Cecilie Koste from Norway. The Canis Clicker Training program consists of an ebook and videos. The videos show in detail the use of a clicker to train your dog. Over 45,000 books have been sold in Europe. The book was designed into an ebook in 2008.  This article is a Canis Clicker Training review.

History Summary of Clicker Training

Clicker training is not new. The principles that established the basis for clicker training were formulated in the 1930’s. The principles were first put into practice by marine biologists to train dolphins. The marine biologists used an air horn in place of a clicker. A clicker would not have been audible for the dolphins when under water.

The training went so well that studies followed using the principles of clicker training to train horses, cats, dogs, and various domesticated animals including birds. It was discovered that animals, who were trained, using the clicker training methodology mastered skills faster than animals using traditional training methods. Today clicker training is becoming popular with all type of animal behaviorist trainers.

What is Clicker Training?

Clicker training uses a mechanical device that makes a click sound. The click sound is used to acknowledge to your dog that a positive action has been performed. The click affirms to your dog "Job well done, here is your treat." Every time your dog hears the click sound it is given a treat. You dog becomes conditioned to the click and the treat. At a certain point in the training your dog will realize that he can get a treat by completing a designated approved action. When the dog reaches this realization the training game begins.

During training negative actions are ignored. There is no punishment or retribution using clicker training. The dog is allowed the freedom to experiment without the fear of punishment. This one factor, of no punishment, increases your dogs willingness to experiment and accelerates learning.

Why Use a Clicker?

The clicker is a mechanical device that makes a click sound when pressed. The click sound is always the same. The consistency of the sound allows you dog to understand exactly what action earned the click and the treat which followed. Your dog, now understanding the desired action that earned the click and treat, will repeat the action again and again. The clicker is used because it can be clicked immediately when the desired action occurs and is always the same sound. A verbal response takes a moment or two. That moment or two of delay can create confusion for your dog. A confused dog is unable to know exactly what desirable action he should perform.

Canis Clicker Training REVIEW

The Canis Clicker Training ebook is very informative. It explains about the development of the training principles. The ebook continues on to explain how to train your dog. Accompanying the ebook are several videos that show actual training procedures using a clicker. The program is very well developed and easy to follow. The total Canis Clicker Training package explains and shows how to use clicker training to train your dog. This is a good well designed program. I highly recommend "Canis Clicker Training."
