Man has coexisted with dogs since the age of cave men.  There are pictographs on cave walls showing dogs as pets.  Over the centuries man has bred dogs to fulfill specific needs of man.  This specialized breeding for specific traits has created what  we identify today as dog breeds.  Dog breed information helps potential dog owners ascertain the best dog traits which match their family’s needs and wants.

Today there are hundreds of different dog breeds.  Some of the breeds were developed for their physical prowess whereas others were bred to be home companions.  Whatever the case, our family’s circumstances should match those of the dog’s physical and mental characteristics.

The physical size of a mature dog does not tell us much.  A small dog may have a high energy level requiring a yard to run around and expend their boundless energy.  The large dog may not have this high energy level and not need the same level of exercise.

Dog temperament varies from dog breed to dog breed.  Some dogs have a difficulty handling stress.  Other breeds ignore or handle stressful situations without any undue affects.  Small Toy Poodles are an example of a dog breed that may have a difficult time in a stressful household with young children.  The high noise level and changeable activity can cause a Toy Poodle to have physical ailments and personality aberrations.  A Beagle is an example of a dog breed that does well in a household with children.

Some physical weaknesses will necessitate a specific diet over another diet.  A dog’s specific nutritional needs may be a major concern.

Choosing Dog Breed

All of this dog breed information should be obtained prior to choosing the dog and dog breed for your family.  It is easier to rule out a specific dog before you become emotionally involved than to discover characteristics later that make the dog incompatible with your family.

Special requirements can create above average financial costs.  Your family’s financial circumstance should be considered in your decision of choosing the right dog breed.  Dog ownership is a long term proposition.  The average dog lives to be in their teens.
