Some Suggested Dog Separation Anxiety Cures
If you dog is suffering from separation anxiety consider the following dog separation anxiety
cures:
- Your dog wants you to be his leader. He wants to follow your lead. If you
are matter-of-fact about leaving and act as if you are in control he will be willing to follow your
example.
- Dogs require plenty of exercise and play time with you. Plan your schedule
so you can exercise your dog before leaving in the morning. You should exercise him hard and fast, don’t take a
leisurely stroll. An hour of exercise is best but 15-20 minutes can work if it is good hard exercise. Be sure
to plan for a cool down period. Remember this will not only benefit your dog but yourself as well. A
well-exercised dog will usually be more content and will probably sleep more while you are
gone.
- Feed your dog before leaving and provide plenty of treats. Your dog will be
more content if you feed him before your leave and he has a full stomach. Kong dog toys are
helpful. These toys have a hole in them and space inside for treats. Place treats inside and then close
the hole with peanut butter or cream cheese. You can also give your dog a large bone to chew on when you leave.
This will keep him occupied while you slip out the door. These special treats should be saved for when you
leave. In this way your dog has something special to look forward to when you leave.
- Purchase a number of chew toys and vary the toys you leave each day. In
this way your dog will not get bored with the toys. It may seem expensive but it is not as expensive as having
your shoes or furniture chewed up.
- Leaving a radio on can also help your dog. It provides some background
noise and can be calming. Classical music is best from an FM station which has few commercials.
- Confine your dog to a specific area of the house as you implement these
suggestions. Dog prove one or two rooms. As your dog learns to adjust to having you leave you can enlarge
the area he can be in. It is helpful if he is in an area where he can see outside. This may help minimize some
of his anxiety.
- Hire someone to walk your dog during the day. This is especially important
if you will be gone for 8-10 hours at a time.

- Do not be overly emotional when leaving or returning home. Don’t give your
dog any goodbye kisses or hugs. Give your dog his treats and toys and then leave. When you return home greet
your dog calmly and do not act overly concerned. You can spend some time playing with him
later.
- You may need to practice leaving. If your dog is still having problems when
you leave you will have to spend some time helping him get used to the idea. If the jingle of keys gets him
anxious then carry your keys around with you during the day. Let him get used to the sound of the keys when you
are not leaving. If putting on your shoes or a coat upsets him put on your shoes or coat and walk around the
house. Continue to do this until he does not get upset when you put them on.
-
- The next step would be to go outside, closing the door behind you. Be sure to open
the door within a few seconds, to start with, and increase the time you stay outside
gradually.
- Break down the steps you follow when you leave the house and let your dog get used
to them slowly.
- The companionship of another pet is much better than chew toys. It will
keep your dog from feeling lonely.
- Take time to learn to train your dog. There are many good programs to help
you do this. Training your dog builds your relationship with him and gives his mind something to think about.
