Golden Retriever Training

Golden Retriever Training / Labrador Retriever Training

Golden Retrievers are a popular breed of dog.  Golden Retrievers are very amicable to Golden Retriever training.  A Golden Retriever puppy is a little more difficult to train than it will be when it’s a little older because of the dog’s high energy and youthfulness.  The Golden Retriever as a breed is gentle mannered and make great pets.

Training a Golden Retriever puppy can be a bit of a problem because the puppy has a tendency to be highly active and vivacious.  The puppies have an inclination to jump, run, bark; doing anything and everything.  They have energy to burn and need physical activity.  Because they are energy active it may be difficult to calm them down to focus on training.

Adult Golden Retrievers are open to Golden Retriever training.  They are an intelligent dog willing and able to accept training.  It is important to establish yourself as the alpha dog leader.  Generally, an adult Golden Retriever will respond quickly to corrective training correcting bad habits.

The Golden Retriever wants the approval of his alpha dog leader.  The factors of intelligence and needing the approval of their alpha dog make them relatively easy to train.

Golden Retriever Training Techniques

Being aware of the Golden Retrievers abilities and wants makes training a Golden Retriever easier.  The instinctual need of approval of the alpha dog leader affords several training options.  Bad habits may be easily correctable by withdrawing the attention of the alpha dog.  Another method of correcting bad habits is using the need for approval by communicating the correct action followed by enthusiastic praise.

The Golden Retriever wants activity; wants to work.  This factor makes the breed accepting of Golden Retriever training.

Golden Retriever Training Examples

A common bad habit of youthful Golden Retrievers is the act of jumping up on people.  One method of correcting this habit is to have a squirt gun available whenever the dog jumps up.  Spraying the dog as you exclaim firmly “NO” will quickly get the message across.  The squirt of water in the face immediately gets their attention.  Accompanying this with a verbal “NO” will provide the knowledge that you do not approve of this method of greeting.  In mild less drastic methods of jumping up merely turning your back and withdrawing your attention will get the message of disapproval across.

Correcting actions should be accompanied with proper behaviors.  Correcting the jumping on greeting should be replaced with the proper form of greeting.  Your dog needs to know how to properly greet someone.  The best solution is to train them to sit until you decide to acknowledge them.  This increases your alpha dog leader status and produces a well-behaved dog.  To do this, you need to withhold your attention from the dog until it is calm and sitting.  When your dog has sat calmly for a period of time then you enthusiastically acknowledge him through praise and possibly a treat.

Golden Retriever Training Summary

Golden Retrievers want your approval.  This need for approval makes training the Golden Retriever easier.  It is important that you establish yourself as the alpha dog leader of your household.

Golden Retrievers make excellent household pets.  They need the opportunity to exercise.  They should be given a descent sized yard to run and exercise.  As a breed they are anxious to work.  Their work is in pleasing you and learning or receiving Golden Retriever training.
