How to Stop Dog Chewing?


Puppies explore the world around them with their mouth chewing things as they explore their environment   Also, as the puppy ages he will be teething.  A puppy that is teething needs to chew in order to manage the gum pain.  .  It is unrealistic to expect a puppy to stop chewing.

Discovering how to stop dog chewing will take time as the tendency to chew is a natural function of the puppy’s learning about his environment.  Initially the best option is to control the items the puppy may chew until the pup has outgrown the teething stage.


Controlling What Your Puppy Chews


By keeping your yard and home clean and picked up your puppy will have few but unwanted items to chew.  Check your home for books, magazines, electronic items that are within the dogs reach.  During the puppy’s first few month of life allow your puppy to explore his world.

Your puppy should have an ample supply of chew toys along with ample directed exercise opportunity.   An exhausted pup has less energy to chew things or get into mischief.


An important factor in learning how to stop dog chewing is allowing your puppy the opportunity to error.  By making mistakes chewing inappropriate things followed immediately with corrective instruction your puppy will learn what is acceptable to chew versus those items that are prohibited.

 
Allow Your Puppy to Freely Associate


Your puppy needs ample time with you so that the pup’s judgment errors can be readily corrected.  A dog that has not been allowed to make decisions will not know what is permissible or sure what is allowed.

 
Your dog needs to develop the ability to make decisions.  Your puppy can only learn to make decisions by making decisions that are corrected when the pup has made improper choices.  Use of a crate is a good potty training tool however a dog that has not been allowed to freely associate with family members will not know what is or is not permissible.

 
Stop Chewing by Mature Dogs


Learning how to stop dog chewing of mature dogs will be quite different than the reasons pup’s chew.  A mature dog that has arbitrarily begun destructive chewing is often the result of sudden environmental or activity change.

Dogs that are yard dogs are often considered to get all the exercise it needs.  In reality most dogs need directed exercise or your dog will find other avenues to occupy his time and dispel his energy.  Commonly a dog left on his own, will spend his energy digging, barking or chewing.

 
You need to provide your dog with directed physical activity every day.  Dogs love training sessions.  Dog agility training provides two necessary elements your dog needs regularly exercise and mental stimulation.

 Your dog not only needs physical exercise activities dogs need ample mental stimulation.  A dog left on his own will develop bad habits commonly the result of boredom.  Dog training sessions lasting to fifteen minutes is usually adequate mental stimulation each day.  It doesn’t matter what you train your dog to do.  The primary thing your dog needs is your personal time.  You are the dog’s alpha leader whom the dog wants to please.

A dog chewing is a frustrating habit that dogs young and old can learn to break.  Often older mature dogs have a harder time breaking the habit as the habit has been allowed persist over a prolonged period.  Providing your dog with exercise and mental stimulation may be all you need to know in understanding how to stop dog chewing.
