The Poodle dog breed is regarded as one of the most intelligent.  Poodles are retrievers or sporting gun dogs.  The Poodle dog breed originated in Germany.  In Germany it is called Pudel.   The German word “pudel” means splash in the water.  The Poodle breed was standardized in France.  In France the dog was used as a retriever for hunters.   The Poodle dog breed gains its fame as a water worker.  Hunters clip portions of the Poodle coat to facilitate the Poodles swimming attributes.

Poodle Dog Breed Characteristics

Most poodles have a dense, curly, non-shedding coat.  The coat requires regular grooming.  Most Poodles are solid colored.  Poodles can come in a variety of sizes.   The Poodle dog breed encompasses all four sizes, standard, medium, miniature and toy.

The Poodle dog breed’s coat consists of a single layer of dense curly fur and sheds very little.  The coat is considered hypoallergenic.  Textures of the coat range from coarse and wooly to soft and wavy.   Pet owners can anticipate grooming a poodle every 6 to 8 weeks.  Poodles are easy to groom at home with the proper equipment.

It is believed that today’s show clips evolved from the hunter’s working clips.  Hunter’s would clip the dogs to more easily facilitate their swimming abilities.  The hunters left fur around the leg joints to provide warmth to those joints when the dogs were swimming in cold water.  The majority of the remaining body features were shaved for less drag while swimming.

Poodle Breed Temperament

The Poodle breed has an instinctual hunting behavior.  Poodles are high energy.  A Poodle will become bored easily and have been known to be creatively mischievous.  Poodles like to be the center of attraction.  They love the opportunity to perform.

Poodles need ineraction with people and are eager to please.  Standard Poodles tend to be good with children.  Younger children or toddlers may be too rough for miniature and toy Poodle sizes.

Poodles are adaptable and train easily.  Poodles are athletically inclined and love the water.  They need quite a lot of exercise.   Poodles have been trained and used in European circus performances for years.   They need exercise regularly.

Poodle Dog Breed Health Issues

With proper care and nutrition Poodle breed dogs may live well into their teens.  Standard Poodles have a medium life span of about 12 years.  Poodle dog breeds are subject to old age syndromes of arthritis, and joint pains.  Common minor health issues are ear infections.  The Poodle breeds are subject to bloat.  Bloat can easily become fatal (6% of death results) to your dog.  Allergies and skin conditions are common.

Poodle Training

The Poodle dog breed is a very intelligent dog.  They want to be the center of attention.  These two qualities provide the motivation necessary for relatively easy Poodle training.

They are accepting of housetraining.  They only need to fully understand where they are to defecate.  The only problem with housetraining is their coat. The coat must be trimmed adequately to allow proper defecation without adhering.

The Poodle is an intelligent dog.  It must not be allowed to be more intelligent than its owner.  You must be the alpha dog leader.  When you establish yourself as the alpha dog leader training will be simplified.
