Though this does not stop dog chewing it does redirect the chewing so that expensive items around the home are not damaged.

Stop Dog Chewing – Boredom and Loneliness

We love and enjoy our pets. At times our personal life styles cause our pets to suffer from loneliness and boredom. Dogs are very social creatures needing interaction with their owner, family members, and other neighborhood animals. A dog that is house bound while its owner is away for most of the day becomes bored and lonely. A dog’s chewing is a natural outgrowth of this type of boredom.

The answer to stop dog chewing as a result of boredom is to eliminate the causes of the loneliness and bored feelings. This may not be accomplished easily as we all have a job and need to “go to work”. However, there are things that can be done that may minimize or rectify the problem.

Providing the dog with doggy toys that it can play with when left alone may help the dog cope with the loneliness. The best doggy toys satisfy the new for a dog to chew plus providing the dog with mental stimulation.

Exercise the Dog Prior to Long Absences

Exercising the dog before you go off to work or leave for long periods is beneficial especially if the dog’s work out is strenuous as the dog may take part of the time alone, to rest and recuperate from the exercise period. If the dog’s reactions to loneliness are still persisting and extreme another option might be doggy day care.

Stop Dog Chewing – Commercial Sprays

The commercial pet dog industry has produced several products that are helpful in stopping some dogs from chewing. There are chew deterrent sprays can be applied to on an item that will make the item chewed taste bitter to the dog. The dog will not like the taste thus stop its chewing of the item. The sprays will not harm the dog physically only provide a bad taste. This is very effective with some dogs, however not all dogs respond as we would like. Test out the sprays with your dog as it is a simple and inexpensive remedy, if it works.

Dogs that chew due to boredom and loneliness while the owner is away may require the owner to limit the area a dog can roam so that the opportunity to indiscriminately chew items cannot occur. One such area would be to confine the movements of the dog to the home’s kitchen. There is no one simple answer to this problem as inappropriate chewing often occurs when the owner is not present. Delayed reprimands are not productive as the dog’s understanding is limited.
