Stop Dog Marking in House

Dog marking is an instinctive behavior used by a dog to communicate to other dogs thisStop Dog Marking in House territory is possessed by another dog. Outside dog marking may have to be tolerated however a dog marking in house is a problem that cannot be tolerated.

Often with young dogs the dog marking in house is misdiagnosed as a house training accident. It is important to recognize dog marking versus a house training accident so that the dog marking can be curtailed as soon as it starts.

Territorial dog marking in house can be distinguished from a housetraining accident by checking the target of the accident. Marking locations are usually on vertical objects. The dog aims his mark as high as possible on the vertical surface.

When a dog marks a location he sprays a minimal quantity of urine on the target. A dog will commonly mark new household furniture or belongings of new household members. A dog will commonly mark objects when visitors stay for a prolonged period of a couple of days or more.

Territorial Marking

Stop Dog Marking Often Requires Neutering Your DogTerritorial marking instincts vary from one breed to another. Dog breeds that traditionally have been trained to be guard dogs commonly mark their territory. Male dogs show a greater propensity for territorial marking than female dogs. Older dogs are likely to begin marking their territory especially if a young puppy has been brought into the household. Also dogs that have not been neutered exhibit a higher inclination to territorial marking.

Outside territorial marking can be a problem when the marking coincides with aggression toward other neighborhood dogs. However generally, outside marking is a behavior that can be dismissed as an instinctual dog behavior, and not as a dog problem that must be corrected.

Dog Marking in House

Dog marking in house often occurs when a dog is confused as to its hierarchical position in the family structure. A dog that is questioning whether it is the alpha dog of the household often will exhibit dog marking behaviors to proclaim its territorial possessions from other members of the household.

Dog marking in house indicates your dog is asserting that the house is his domain that he is the alpha dog leader. The dog marking possessions of visitors indicates a hierarchal superiority over the guest visitors thereby becoming the alpha dog over the household guests. You, the alpha leader must resume your position as the alpha dog leader if you are to curtail the problem of dog marking in house.

Stopping Dog Marking

Areas that have been marked need to be thoroughly cleaned eliminating all odors from the affected areas. Objects that the dog has a propensity to mark need to moved so that the opportunity does not present itself.

As dogs that have not been neutered are more likely to territorial mark than dogs that have been neutered spaying your dog is a recommended action to stop dog marking. Though not 100% affective neutering often stops the problems of dog marking.

It is important that you assert yourself as the household’s alpha dog leader. In home with multiple dogs you must intervene in all hierarchal dog squabbles asserting yourself as the alpha leader.
